Challenge

20 November 2018 by tom

The device I’m writing this on is only one example of what is possible. A phone, a camera, a computer, all fitting comfortably in my hand and pocket.

It’s not magic, but focused use of resources. Who can tell what our world would be like if it weren’t for the space race?

Then explain how anyone can go without clean water on a planet more than two thirds under water. I get that it’s the wrong water but we can desalinate seawater.

It’s just too expensive or not important enough.

Walk

28 October 2018 by tom

For the first time in my life, a batter walked to first base without seeing a pitch. I always thought the four-pitch walk redundant but what’s next? Sacrifices?

date

22 October 2018 by tom

March 9, 1958, a date which will live in everyone’s infamies…their birthdate. One fact we all have to remember. To fail the “what’s your birthdate” query is the ultimate failure. And that’s mine. Birthdate, not failure. Or you could see it both ways.

Path

My career started with a fascination with synthesizers, Keith Emerson mostly. Reading about waveforms got me to tech school, debt and jobs bench testing electronic assemblies. No music anywhere. Still listen to synthesizers though. They’re in most music, in one form or another.

Mookie

10 October 2018 by tom

Mookie reached and caught the ball, just as a fan leaned out and dropped his phone. Ten feet. Mookie picked it up and handed it back to him. The man extended his hand in thanks and Mookie tapped it with his glove. Fucking magic. Poetry in humanity. True oneness manifest.

There’s a strength.

10 October 2018 by tom

Somewhere that we can draw on. You can lose that, and gone. Who keeps it and more importantly who uses it? Wise men can say “find it in yourself” as if it was a pantry. Behind the sugar.

Not everybody has to draw it. Some lives are easy, charmed and can say flippantly that “life’s not that hard,” when you know there are men, women and children dying in the streets.

It’s getting that bad. I’ve felt deeply about social issues all my life. Variety is the spice of life. Expecting literally every human to be either A or B and nothing else is absurd.

Black? My stove is black. It’s almost impossible to make black frosting. Black reflects heat, as anyone in L.A. know: called Santa Ana winds. All because asphalt is black.

Everybody is a subtle shade of brown. I was Irish white, as George Carlin said “we glow at the beach.” Now I’ve got a decent tan and seeing my dad at his age.

Red? Red’s a hard color to paint and paint over.

22 September 2018 by tom

i had a mental taste of what is called grapes when i drank grape soda as a kid, long before i tasted a grape. i was disappointed in the grape; fell short of the soda sold under its name.

ended up liking grapes anyway.

self

15 September 2018 by tom

in creating a mental image as a means of remembering a concept, my visualization of the idea of multiple selves all driving the metaphorical bus that we call our mind becomes a frenzied melee as they all try to grab the wheel and that’s quite often how it feels.
